Serigraph printed on paper, size: 17.75" x 22.75"
The Ongoing Construction series depicts familiar objects of American construction (e.g., the blue tarp) rendered in precise elevation. These drawings suggest a simultaneous indictment of and appreciation for the tarp, highlighting its capacity to obscure or conceal, creating both grotesque and delicate forms. Crain employs the drawing techniques he refined during his thesis year at The Cooper Union to capture these shrouds. Like Crain’s other works, the subjects of this series are ordinary, overlooked objects that, through meticulous description, reveal their oddities and invite contemplation they might not otherwise receive.
Gus Crain is a recent graduate of The Cooper Union Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture. He currently practices architecture, art, and printmaking in New York, where he also co-instructs an advanced seminar at The Cooper Union on architectural representation through printmaking techniques. Crain’s architectural thesis focused on suburban strip malls, proposing design interventions to adapt these structures to better serve the evolving needs of the communities they inhabit. The thesis was executed as a series of graphite drawings, combined with new digital drawing techniques that he continues to refine in his personal drawing practice.
The Ongoing Construction Series was produced for the exhibition, Architectural Drawing #3, held at A83 in 2024.
Signed and numbered by Gus Crain in a limited edition of 10.

A83 Editions

A83 is a nonprofit organization with a tripartite mission to exhibit, publish, and promote experimental projects in architecture, art, and design. Building from the previous operation, John Nichols Printmakers & Publishers (1978 –1994), the organization continues to operate at the original location in SoHo as a printmaking studio, gallery, and growing archive. The 83 Grand Street location is used to produce exhibitions and installations, host workshops, and broadcast work to new audiences.
